Grand Prix

NEW!!B.C. Junior 2002-2003 Grand Prix

Over the next year, the B.C. Chess Federation will be running a Junior Grand Prix competition. Here's how it works:

Players rated above 1000 (CFC) will be organized in descending order in groups of four, beginning with the highest-rated four people.

The members of each quad will play each of the other 3 players in a three-game Round Robin, with a time control of 45 minutes per player plus a 30-second increment for each move.

Once these quads have been formed to the nearest four players, all remaining players will play in a separate Swiss-style tournament consisting of five one-hour rounds.

Junior Grand Prix/Swiss Tournaments will be held on each of the following Sundays:

September 22, 2002
October 27, 2002
November 24, 2002
January 5, 2003

February 16, 2003
March 16, 2003
April 13, 2003
May 25, 2003

Prizes: The winner of each quad will receive $18; the second place finisher will receive $12. The top finishers in the Swiss event will receive trophies or books.

Grand Prix prizes:

At the end of the year, each player takes the total of his or her six best results. A player who plays in more than six Grand Prix events is able to discard his or her worst result(s), and therefore it is advantageous to participate in all eight events. $1,250 in prizes will then be awarded, as follows:

1^st $300; 2^nd $250; 3^rd $200; 4^th $150; 5^th $100; 6^th-10^th: $50 each .

The following details apply to all eight events:

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Vancouver Bridge Centre (2776 East Broadway at Kaslo St.)*
Registration: 9:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.
Entry fee: $12.
Eligibility: Juniors (19 years and under).

* except # 2, which is in Strathcona - see junior schedule for details
