SMITHERS 2002 NORTHERN BC WINTER GAMES

The 2002 edition of this long running event was held Feb. 1 and 2 and might be subtitled the Forsyth Saga as members of that clan amassed three gold medals and one silver.  A further sub-plot was the compressed schedule (three rounds Friday, two Saturday); the resultant fatigue of the combatants (I don't use this term lightly as there was but one lonesome draw all weekend long) led to numerous oversights and upsets in the final round.

The Open class winner was Bob (Pincher) Chapman of Smithers with 4/5.  He filched the gold medal from Jason Danner (another local) by virtue of a superior tie-break after Alan Forsyth's shocking last round upset of Danner.  Forsyth's victory capped an excellent 4/5 tally and secured him the gold medal in the Under-1500 category.  His cousin Bruce Forsyth of New Hazelton claimed the silver with 3/5, the same score as bronze medal winner Trieu Nguyen of Burns Lake.  Trieu's brother Vinh Nguyen was the top scoring junior with 3/5.  Their compatriot Rene Miller grabbed the silver with Colin Combes of 100 Mile House taking the bronze, both with 2/5.

The cadet section was run separately as a six-player double round robin.  The co-winners with 8/10 were brothers Brendan and Gavin Forsyth.  (Proud father and agent Bruce was last seen negotiating a lucrative TV deal with lovely Lisa from the local station.)  It was decided to award two gold medals as all tiebreakers (including alphabetic by last name) were equal.  Dexter Fawcett of Vanderhoof turned in a promising 6/10 result to claim the bronze medal.

There was one very noticeable absence at these games:  Prince Rupert's Nicholas Taylor, who died of a long term illness last November.  Nicholas is undoubtedly the record holder for NBCWG events attended and most medals won, by a huge margin.  His organizational efforts and tireless promotion of chess will be extremely difficult to replace.  He will be sorely missed in the tight-knit local chess community.  May the secrets of the King's Gambit finally be revealed to you; rest in peace old friend.

We would like to thank all the sponsors, especially Alcan, for their long time support of this unique northern tradition.  And thanks also to CFTK TV and local media for their coverage.
