BC OPEN

After a year's absence the BC Open returned with a vengeance, attracting a
total of 73 players! This turnout was the largest for a non-Keres weekend swiss
in many a moon; why players suddenly deceide to come out to this event in
particular is unclear, although the promotional efforts of Peter Stockhausen
certainly had their effect. The glorious weather shouldn't have been a
contributing factor, although the forest-fire situation perhaps kept people at home.

The tournament began at the Vancouver Bridge Centre, but due to a
double-booking transferred to the Croatian Community Centre on Commercial Drive for the
last two days. There were some noise problems from a contemporary praise
church and two wedding receptions, but the players took these in their stride
(thank you!), and we are extremely grateful to Robert Topic and the Croatian
Community Centre for accommodating us at such short notice, also for the cake and
wine at the prize-giving ceremony.

The BC Open champion for this year is Jiri Jirka, a twenty year-old IM elect
from the Czech Republic who is in Victoria for a month visiting family
friends. He previously won a number of the Czech youth championships, and tied for
first in this year's Czech Junior Championship. Jiri has three IM-norms to his
credit, and is awaiting formal approval of his title from FIDE. He won the
BC Open in convincing fashion, winning his first five games before agreeing to
a draw in the last round.

Tied for second were Jack Yoos, Fanhao Meng, and Nigel Fullbrook with 4.5/6;
also scoring 4.5 was Jesse Bouvier, who took the top U2100 prize. These four
players also receive paid entries into the BC Closed Championship, to be held
in Victoria at Thanksgiving. Second U2100 was Yamei Wang, who reached her 4
point total by beating Gerry Neufahrt and Joe Oszvald in the last two rounds.
Five players tied for the U1900 prizes: Curtis Lister, Tony Verma, Evgeni
Goutor, Ernie Krzyzowski and Andrey Kostin.

In the U1800 Section Sumon Chai Phonchiangkwong was running away with the
tournament until he finally lost in the last round, but by that stage he was
one-and-a-half points ahead of the field, so the loss did not affect his first
place finish. Tying for second were Petr Labik, Richard Reid, and William Jung.
Tiffany Tang claimed the first U1600 prize, while five-players tied for
second: James Taylor, Rodolfo Planas, Jamie Harper, Lesley Cheng, and Vlad Gaciu.
The U1400 first prize was taken by Lo-Ching Chow, with Idaho junior Alvin Chi
placing second.

Notable in both sections but especially in the U1800 were the strong
performances put in by several junior players, many of whom are successfully making
the transition from junior-only tournaments to open events with longer time
controls. This bodes well for the future of BC chess, even if the young
"upstarts" are causing discomfort for their elders. As one older player ruefully put
it, "these juniors just don't hang pieces any more!"

Stephen Wright was the director, Katherine Davies the organizer.

VICTORIA JULY MASTERS AND SUMMER QUAD by Mike Stanford

This tournament was organized by Mike Stanford to give some of the strong
local players an opportunity to play in a FIDE-rated event. It took place at
UVIC, and spanned the July 11-13 weekend. The ten players were divided into a
six-player round robin and a quad; the winner of the RR was
Jack Yoos. Second place went to Jeff Reeve, who was the only player to hold
Jack to a draw. Howard Wu and Mike Stanford tied for third. Special thanks
to Lynn Stringer for TDing the event, and billeting some out of towners.

The quad was won by George Kostadinov, who went without a loss, and second
place went to Harry Moore with Manfrei Aquino and Paul Leblanc bringing up the
rear.

UPCOMING EVENTS

New this time are announcements for the Labour Day Open and BC Closed:

Individual Chess Matches

Players interested in participating in rated individual chess matches with
other players of comparable or dissimilar ratings can contact Luis E. Azmitia
at: azmitia@interchange.ubc.ca

Please make sure to include in the e-mail: your name, your rating, type of
game preferred (i.e. active), and the rating range of possible opponents. Note
that the games will be held in the Vancouver area.

Nick Beqo's Sunday Tournaments

Practice your openings and improve your chess, by playing in a quiet and
beautiful park!
You get to know the pairings one day before, so you can study your opponents,
and your home preparations will surprise us! Games, often annotated by
players or masters, will be available.

Dates: Every Sunday (sunny or rainy), 12:00PM - 6:00PM
Entry Fee: $5.00 Free entry for the highest rated player!
Prizes: 1st - $30.00 2nd - $20.00.
Location: Bear Creek Park, Surrey, B.C. The covered area on 140th Street side.
The park is between King George Hwy, 140th Street, 88th Ave & 84th Ave.
To get there, you can take a bus from King George skytrain station.
Participants and pairings: based on FIDE or CFC ELO active rating system.
Time control: G15
Rounds: 11 Round Robin. 30min. break after the 6th round (3:00-3:30)
Sponsors: none (so far). All sponsors will be advertised on this website.
Registrations: via e-mail at: nickbeqo@hotmail.com Dead line: Friday 11:00 PM.
Bring your own chess set, and clock.
Note:
a) Sportsmanship is required. No draw offers or draw claims, unless DEAD
DRAW!
This rule is not only because it is a speed chess tournament, but also
because there would be no room for pre-arrangements in order to split the prize. It
will be unfair to other players.
b) Rated events require at least 25 min time control. This will reduce both,
the number of players for a round robin-event, and also the prizes, since a
part of entry fees has to go to Federation. Depends on the number of players, I
might run two events at the same time:
1. unrated tournament with 12 players, and 15 min time control.
2. rated tournament with 6 players, and 25 min time control.
c) I am organizing this tournament in order to help chess players, especially
in Fraser Valley, as it is too far to play in Croatian Center or Vancouver
Bridge Center. Therefore, chess players are going to make the tournament rules,
not me. I am open to suggestions and make the respective changes.
Remember: 100% of the entry fees go to prizes!
