This year's edition of the annual B.C. - Washington junior match, played on the campus of B.C.I.T. in Burnaby, resulted in an exciting 25-23 victory for the home players. The B.C. team won the first round handily by a five-point margin, but in the second session the Washington squad gradually closed the gap, first equalling and then surpassing the overall B.C. score. With four games left to finish Washington held a two-point lead over B.C., resulting in the dramatic finale: B.C. won all four games to take the match! First Alexander Reid's opponent blundered into a mating net in an ending, then Jason Lee won a fine game to defeat the highest- rated Washington player, Eduard Shamilov (some readers may remember him from the last Keres Memorial). Yamei Wang and Samuel Wong were the last two B.C. players to finish: both had similiar positions, up an exchange but considerably down on time. The prospect of long technical endgames with a sudden-death time control was not encouraging, but both managed to turn their games into king hunts, thereby winning quickly and giving the B.C. team victory in the match.
Individually, perfect scores were recorded by Joshua Wild (grade 1), Jason Lee (9), Yamei Wang (10) and Samuel Wong (11) for B.C., while the same feat was accomplished by Stuart King (1), Michael Cambareri (5) and Stephen Pick (7) for Washington. In addition, B.C. players Fanhao Meng and Lucas Davies won all their games in the grade 8 matches, while David Maggs and Sunil Deolalikar returned the favour for Washington in grade 3. Others having plus scores: Peter Sum and Tiffany Tang (B.C., both grade 6), and Jeffrey Ching (Washington, grade 12). There were exceptions, but in general B.C. scored better in the higher grades, Washington in the lower.
The match was held on December 1st, 2001. The time control for grades 4-6 was 60 minutes per player, for grades 7-12 90 minutes per player. Clocks were not used for the lowest grades. Many thanks to the players, their parents and coaches, with a special thank you to the organizers, Bill Lee and Katherine Davies (B.C.) and Ollie Lafreniere (Washington). See you next year in Seattle!
