BCCF E-MAIL BULLETIN # 1
Hello! Welcome to the first issue of the BCCF's new e-mail bulletin. This
biweekly publication will offer news and reports of interest to chess players
in British Columbia. I as editor will coordinate the proceedings, but much
of the content is up to you: you are encouraged to submit news, reports,
games, or other items you wish to share with your fellow players. This
bulletin is not an attempt to supplant the BCCF website, but rather is an
adjunct to it - we encourage you to visit the site frequently for more
details and information. British Columbia Chess Federation

VICTORIA LABOUR DAY OPEN by Lynn Stringer
There were 34 entries and 1st went to Jack Yoos [5.0/6]. 2nd was Georgi
Kostadinov, who was the only player to defeat Yoos. First Under 2000 was Paul
Leblanc and 2nd was Justin Hardy. We had two sections and the Under 1800 was
won by Tyler Cruz and Nosovic Branislav.
BUGHOUSE BC
Welcome to the latest insect infestation to hit the province - Bughouse
chess! Largely through the efforts of Ben Daswani and Bruce Harper, this team
form of chess (a.k.a. siamese and other names)
has become organized, with specific tournaments and a separate rating system.
Here is a report on the most recent bughouse event:
August Open by Ben Daswani
Fifteen Buggers (five from Washington) showed up to the Vancouver August
Open, taking place on August 25, 2002. Although this number is lower than 17,
the number of participants in the June Open, consolation can be taken in the
fact that more than half (eight, to be precise) were newcomers to rated
Bughouse events in BC. Good Bug was played, and good times were had. In the
end, Michael Oshiro, one of the Americans, emerged victorious, with a
dominating score of 31/42. What was even more impressive was the fact that
with the exception of the final round, at which point he had already clinched
first, he scored at least 4/6 in every round! Amazing! In second was local
junior Graham Sadoway, with 28.5/42. In third was another Washington player,
Bret Sherman with 26/42.

JUNIOR NEWS
Over the next year, the B.C. Chess Federation will be running a Junior Grand
Prix competition. Here's how it works:
- Players rated above 1000 (CFC) will be organized in descending order in
groups of four, beginning with the highest-rated four people.
- The members of each quad will play each of the other 3 players in a
three-game Round Robin, with a time control of 45 minutes per player plus a
30-second increment for each move.
- Once these quads have been formed to the nearest four players, all
remaining players will play in a separate Swiss-style tournament consisting
of five one-hour rounds.
- Junior Grand Prix/Swiss Tournaments will be held on each of the following
Sundays:
September 22, 2002 February 16, 2003
October 27, 2002 March 16, 2003
November 24, 2002 April 13, 2003
January 5, 2003 May 25, 2003
Prizes: The winner of each quad will receive $18; the second place finisher
will receive $12. The top finishers in the Swiss event will receive trophies
or books.
Grand Prix prizes:
At the end of the year, each player takes the total of his or her six best
results. A player who plays in more than six Grand Prix events is able to
discard his or her worst result(s), and therefore it is advantageous to
participate in all eight events. $1,250 in prizes will then be awarded, as
follows:
1st $300; 2nd $250; 3rd $200; 4th $150; 5th $100; 6th-10th: $50 each.
The following details apply to all eight events:
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Vancouver Bridge Centre (2776 East Broadway at Kaslo St.)
Registration: 9:30 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.
Entry fee: $12.

30 YEARS AGO... by Bruce Harper
[Editor: BCCF president Bruce Harper wrote a chess column for the Vancouver
Province for 10 years in the 1970s and early 1980s. In a regular feature he
will be presenting "flashbacks" to events from that era, based on his
original columns.]
Thirty years ago, then Canadian Champion Peter Biyiasas won the Victoria
Labour Day Open with 6.5/7. Jonathan Berry finished second, a full point
behind. A total of 83 players took part, including 40 juniors. Dan Scoones
directed.
Many may have forgotten how strong Peter was in 1972, and he got even
stronger. His ability to keep a cool head under pressure and squeeze out a
win in a favourable ending with his superb technique won him many games.
In his game with Victoria strongman Ray Kerr, the game got strange very
quickly, as Biyiasas challenged his opponent with 8.h3. For a while it looked
as though White would end up giving up his queen for two rooks, but he
extracted his queen and emerged from the complications with the exchange. But
Black's compact position and pressure against White's king gave him
compensation, and White returned the exchange. That left material equal.
In my column, I criticize Black's 26th move, suggesting 26...Nc6 27.Bxc6 Rc8
"with an easy draw". So easy to say - but so hard to do! The rook and pawn
ending still favours White, although "all rook and pawn endings are drawn"
(Tarrasch). I now think that trading queens was Black's real mistake. After
24...Nb7!, to answer 25.Qf2 with 25...Nd6, Black is better, both because of
the general principle that "queen and knight are better than queen and
bishop" (although there are still a two rooks on the board) and because of
the concrete factors that Black's king is safer than White's and White's
kingside pawns are split.
As the game went, Biyiasas won a wonderfully precise king and pawn ending.
